Back in October, a few weeks before the midterm election, the "Tuesday Talks at the White House" used an afternoon video chat to have members of the President's Committee on the Arts give an overview of their goals and then take questions from the public. The video runs approximately 47 minutes. Panelists include George Stevens, Jr., Margo Lion and Chuck Close.
The first issue of Theatertimes Quarterly references this performance. A memoir of being in the O'Neill home in Waterford during a theater conference, recalls the subject of Long Day's Journey into Night and the pain of O'Neill's father, James O'Neill, at having squandered great talent on the stage, in pursuit of financial security. It was an understandable choice, given his father's childhood poverty. But the pain it left him with, and the scars it carved in his soul, became a core revelation in this play that would stand as O'Neill's greatest work. In this excerpt from the American Experience biography of the playwright, Christopher Plummer, who also narrates the documentary, talks about his feelings for O'Neill's writing, and then performs two of James Tyrone's monologues.
